DSU Work-Based Learning Tour held for high school students

Delaware State University recently welcomed over 150 high school students from eight Teacher Academy programs – Smyrna High School, Appoquinimink High School, Odessa High School, Middletown High School, Poly Tech High School, Dover High School, Caesar Rodney High School, Sussex Tech High School – for a dynamic Work-Based Learning Tour.

The Oct. 23 visit was designed to provide aspiring educators with a meaningful introduction to college life, teacher preparation pathways, and the vibrant educational community at DSU.  Coordinated by Dr. Kristin Brown-Massey and Darren Rainey of DSU’s Education Department, the day-long event featured:

  • A guided tour of DSU’s historic campus.
  • An opportunity to sit in on live education courses.
  • A conversation with the Education Department faculty.             
  • Roundtable discussions with current DSU education majors and faculty.         
  • Informal conversations about navigating the path to becoming an educator. 

Students and staff also enjoyed lunch at the Village Café, dining alongside DSU students and engaging with key campus leaders, including Dr. Charlisa Edelin (Assistant Dean, Student Life and Academic Success) and Dr. Kareem McLemore (Associate Vice President of Strategic Enrollment Management and International Affairs).  This immersive experience aimed to expose students to the academic, professional, and cultural richness of DSU while encouraging them to consider careers in education.

The event served as both a recruitment initiative and a celebration of the University’s commitment to building a diverse and empowered educator pipeline.  Special thanks go to all the faculty, staff, and student leaders who supported the visit, as well as DSU Senior Glen Harmon for his behind-the-scenes leadership in organizing the event. The collective effort made a lasting impression on Delaware’s future educators—and perhaps, future Hornets.
