The program was hosted by Ningbo University of Technology and coordinated by DSU’s Office of International Affairs. Students participated in cultural traditions such as Chinese painting and Tai Chi meditation, and visited historical sites including the Song Dynasty Stone Carving Park at Dongqian Lake and Baoguo Temple.
“I’m truly thankful for the university’s commitment to global engagement and for supporting study abroad programs that promote cultural awareness,” said Isis Harrison, a junior law studies major. “This experience was both educational and transformative, offering me the chance to immerse myself in a new culture while gaining a deeper understanding of a different way of life.”
Brandon Jones, a management major with a focus in marketing, said the trip gave him a deeper appreciation for cultural history and artistic expression.
“Studying abroad in Ningbo, China offered me a profound cultural and educational immersion,” he said. “Living among Chinese locals, I had the unique opportunity to go beyond the classroom and explore the deep roots of Chinese history and tradition.”
“One of the most memorable aspects of my experience was learning the traditional art of Chinese painting,” he added. “It taught me patience, precision and the beauty of storytelling through brushwork. These experiences continue to shape the way I view history, identity and the power of art in communication and leadership.”
Nia Dooley, a rising junior and elementary education major, said the opportunity supported her goal of becoming an international educator.
“This study abroad trip was an amazing experience,” she said. “As an education major interested in teaching abroad, having the opportunity to observe and experience an educational space at an international university was life-changing. I appreciated the excitement of our hosts as well as the kindness and curiosity of the community members that we interacted with.”
Jaylah C. May Israel, a rising sophomore chemistry major and Miss Sophomore of the University, said the trip was impactful and enlightening.
“Traveling abroad to China was an eye-opening experience,” she said. “It was enriching to see their vast cultural differences.”
Harrison reflected on the impact of connecting with local students.
“Sharing meals and conversations with Chinese students and learning about their way of life made me think more deeply about the differences between our countries,” she said. “It broadened my interest in international law after law school.”
El Hadji Mbaye, an aviation student, said the experience had a direct connection to his career goals. “Studying abroad in China was a truly formative experience,” he said. “Immersing myself in a new culture taught me so much about global perspective, communication and connection. These lessons are vital as I work toward becoming a pilot.”
Denasia Brown, who is studying early childhood education and teaching, called the experience life-changing. “I gained a new perspective on culture, education and myself,” she said. “Visiting Ningbo and experiencing local life up close was incredibly eye-opening.”
The students expressed their gratitude to DSU’s Office of International Affairs and Dr. Kareem McLemore, Ed.D., for supporting and encouraging the experience.
