DSUAA NCCo Chapter’s 42nd annual Scholarship Luncheon

The New Castle County Chapter of the DSU Alumni Association presented seven scholarships and also celebrated six distinguished honorees during 42nd annual Scholarship Luncheon.(L-r) Awardees Leroy Tice, Tetra Shockley, Darius Brown, Tara Allen, Bruce Pinkett, and Kia O. Wyatt-Woolfolk.

Held on Aug. 9 at the Executive Banquet and Conference Center in Newark, Del., the NCCo Chapter presented a $1,250 scholarship to each of the following incoming freshmen to DSU:

  • Cierra Brown-Armstrong, a Pre-Nursing major from Newark, Del.
  • Anya Bobo, a Pre-Nursing major from Newark, Del.
  • Jada Branch, a Business Management major from Middletown, Del.
  • Kylan Chancey, a Pre-Nursing major from New Castle, Delaware
  • Saniyah Anderson-Harris, a Kinesiology major from Wilmington, Del.
  • Jewel Radford, a Kinesiology major from Claymont, Del.
  • Mikayla Quarles, a Pre-Nursing major from Bear, Del.

The NCCo Chapter presented its Community Distinguished Award to the following honorees for their service to DSU and the communities in Delaware:

  • Tara Allen, the First Lady of DSU. The wife of DSU President Tony Allen, Mrs. Allen is a champion for women’s athletics and organization at the University and is the Chairwoman of the “Words Are a Creative Force” scholarship fund for single mothers.
  • Delaware Sen. Darius Brown. In addition to serving in the Delaware General Assembly, he is also the Pastor of Mt. Salem and United Methodist Church in Wilmington, Del. His work in the state legislature has led the News Journal to name him as one of the champions of “criminal justice and racial equity.”
  • Bruce Pinkett, the current President of the Monday Club in Wilmington, Del., which is the oldest black men’s social club in the First State and is believed to be the oldest such social club in the United States. He is a retired Senior Sgt. with New Castle County Police, has worked on fraud cases for the Delaware Department of Justice, and currently serves as the Deputy Director of the New Castle County Public Services.

The NCCo Chapter also presented its Distinguished DSU Alumni Awards to the following recipients:

  • Tetra S. Shockley, Esq., a law partner at Benton & Shockley Law, P.A., where she specializes in family law and personal injury. A 2004 graduate of DSU, she is a past titlist of several pageants – Mrs. Cosmos United States (2019) and Mrs. Delaware America (2016, 2021, and 2024).
  • Leroy Tice, Esq, a 2002 graduate of DSU, currently serves as the Chairman of the DSU Board of Trustees. As an attorney, Mr. Tice specializes in personal injury cases. He currently serves as the Chairman of the License and Inspection Review Board of Wilmington and is a former counsel for the Delaware House of Representatives.
  • Kia O. Wyatt-Woolfolk, a 1990 graduate of DSU, is a pharmaceutical industry sales executive and serves as a marketing consultant for small businesses and non-profits. She has served her community through various ministries at Canaan Baptist Church of New Castle, Del. She is also a past vice president for the NCCo alumni chapter of the DSUAA.

The keynote speaker for the event DSU Football Head Coach DeSean Jackson.

The event was attended by 287 alumni and University officials.
