University Police observe Denim Day

Friday, September 27, 2019

The University’s Police Department members wore jeans on Sept. 25 in a show of solidarity with “Denim Day” as part of that date’s Delaware Sexual Assault Awareness Day.

Denim Day in connection with sexual assault awareness originated in Italy over 20 years ago in response to a court ruling in that country. In that case, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans and the justices believed she must have helped the person accused of raping her to remove the jeans.

Since then, Denim Day has been an annual day and a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual harassment, abuse, assault and rape.
