Dr. Tony Allen receives Civic Leadership Award

The Campus Compact Mid-Atlantic (CCMA) has honored Dr. Tony Allen, Provost and Executive Vice President of Delaware State University, with its 2018 Civic Leadership Award.

Dr. Allen received the award on Nov. 8 at the CCMA’s President’s Institute and 10th Anniversary Ceremony held at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.University Provost Tony Allen holds his Civic Leadership Award with Dr. Roberta Cordano, president of Gallaudet University.

The award recognized Dr. Allen’s contributions in the development of civic and community engagements, and for inspiring a culture of engagement that has been instrumental in the overall success of campus-community collaborations at the University, through work that includes:

Announcing a new commitment of University community service and service learning in an August 2017 guest editorial entitled “Of Service,” published in the News Journal.

Spearheading a University commitment to create a campus-wide service requirement that will be established by fall 2019.

The development of a formal agreement between the City of Wilmington, Delaware State University and the University of Delaware in October 2017 to leverage research and service assets to tackle critical problems in the city.

In coordination with the Center for Advancing Opportunity and the Riverside Initiative, leading the University’s involvement in the organization of a Center for Neighborhood Revitalization and Research in north and northeast Wilmington, Del.

Leading the induction of service clubs at both the University and its Early College High School into the Delaware Rotary Club in March 2018.

Along with other University officials, in 2018 persuaded the State of Delaware to add a fourth year of full state funding to the University’s Inspire Scholarship Program. The additional year will bring about an additional 10,000 hours of service learning/community service projects per year.

Delaware Gov. John Carney and Wilmington Mayor Michael Purzcki submitted letters of endorsement for the award.

The Campus Compact Mid-Atlantic Region (CCMA) is a nonprofit membership association of public and private colleges and universities. The CCMA provides leadership to colleges and universities in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Delaware by advocating, supporting, and encouraging institutional participation in academic and co-curricular based public service and civic engagement programs. CCMA strengthens the capacity of member institutions to enhance student learning and meaningfully engage with communities.
