Held on the DSU practice field next to Alumni Stadium, about 35 youths from grades 5-8 participated in the Saturday morning event. The activities included rounds of rigorous exercises that focused on speed, agility and muscular strength as well as other football-related drills. The culmination of the event was a 7-on-7 football game in which all the participants played.

The event was the brainchild of Dover Police Ptlm. Anthony Smith, the department’s newly appointed PAL (Police Athletic League) coordinator, who initiated the football combine partnership with DSU and worked with DSU Police Chief Harry Downes and Lt. Joi Simmons to make it happen.

In addition to the involvement of DSU police officers, other law enforcement participants included the Smyrna Police and the Wilmington Police, the latter of which included Sr. Cpl. Michael Coleman. Coleman is not only at 10-year veteran of the department, but also was also a former wide receiver draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams.

Other volunteers included employees of Best Buy, Smyrna High School football players and other PAL volunteers. Sponsors included Target, Ed’s Tent Company, Sam’s Club, Wawa (N. DuPont Highway, Dover) Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Walmart stores of Camden, Dover, Middletown and Bear. Each youth who took part received a brand new football provided by some of the participating businesses.
