DSU Contributes to Hurricane Relief Efforts

Monday, October 30, 2017

Delaware State University has joined in a community effort to get much-needed relief items to the Hurricane Harvey-impacted region of Texas.

A group of DSU students and staff members took part in the statewide “Operation Fill That Truck for Texas” that collected items from Sept. 8 to Oct. 21. At DSU, donated items – mostly clothing – were collected toward the effort during the recent Oct. 13-14 Homecoming Weekend.

Joining Del State in the relief campaign were more than 40 other partners that included religious organizations, businesses, state and local government agencies and other institutions. The combined effort resulted in more than 100,000 donated items that filled a two-ton truck to capacity, which left for Houston on Oct. 22.

Because the campaign collected more clothing, toiletries, school supplies and other needful things than could be fit on the truck to Houston, the remaining relief items will go to relief efforts in Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, which are still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

The donation drive was spearheaded by Bishop Jeffrey Broughton, Sr., of Living Grace Worship Cathedral of Middletown, Del.
