Gov. Jack Markell observes the work of an ECHS science class during his Dec. 2 visit.

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell paid a visit Dec. 2 to Delaware State University’s Early College High School (ECHS), which opened in late August with its first class of ninth graders.

Dr. Judi Coffield, ECHS director, took Gov. Markell on a tour of the ECHS, where the state’s chief executive observed the current instruction the students received. He also spent some time with a social studies class where he talked with them about some current issues such as recycling, domestic violence, as well as his work as the state governor.

Gov. Markell noted that the ECHS is a great opportunity in which high school students can complete half of their college studies by the time they graduate from the high school, thereby cutting their college cost in half. He encouraged the students to make the most of their experience at the ECHS and to be a role model for subsequent classes of students that enroll in the coming years.
