DSU Student Establishes University’s First Black Law Student Association

Tuesday, October 20, 2026

Delaware State University junior Zafyr K. Ahmad is creating new opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in law through the establishment of the University’s first Black Law Student Association (BLSA).

Ahmad, a Criminal Justice major with a minor in Sociology, serves as the organization’s chartering founder and president. His efforts to establish the association have also earned him recognition from the City of Dover. On October 9, he received an official proclamation from Mayor Robin Christiansen acknowledging the organization’s founding.

The Black Law Student Association was established to provide DSU students interested in law, criminal justice, public service and the legal profession with opportunities to connect, develop professional relationships and gain exposure to potential career paths.

“I founded BLSA because I wanted to create a space where DSU students interested in law, criminal justice, public service, and the legal profession could connect with one another, build professional relationships, and gain access to opportunities that can help prepare them for their futures,” Ahmad said.

Since its establishment, the organization has focused on developing relationships with attorneys, judges, law firms, legal organizations and law schools to help students explore the various opportunities available within the legal field.

Among its first major initiatives is an upcoming educational and professional development trip to Harvard Law School on Oct. 28–29, 2026. Approximately 20 Delaware State University students are expected to participate in the visit, which will include a tour of the law school, engagement with J.D. Admissions representatives and an opportunity to connect with members of Harvard’s Black Law Students Association.

The trip represents an early milestone for the newly established organization as it works to expand students’ exposure to law schools and professional opportunities beyond campus.

For Ahmad, the association’s mission extends beyond its establishment as a student organization. He hopes BLSA will serve as a lasting resource for students interested in entering the legal profession.

“For me, this organization is about more than simply creating another student organization on campus,” Ahmad said. “It is about opening doors for DSU students and showing them that opportunities in the legal profession are attainable.”

As BLSA continues to grow, Ahmad hopes to strengthen its connections within the legal community while creating additional educational and professional development opportunities for Delaware State University students.
