The holiday spirit was alive on campus as the DSU community came together for the 7th Annual Holiday Toy Drive on Saturday, filling tables with more than 4,000 toys for families across Kent County. Student Government Executive Board Member Na’ja Stokes and the Student Government Association under the Hustle Administration led this year’s effort.

“What inspired this toy drive was wanting to give back and truly make a difference in the community,” Stokes said.

The University community responded with overwhelming support. “We were able to get at least 4,100 toys from students, staff, and faculty,” she said. The turnout allowed the Student Government team to offer a wide selection for children who attended. The event also featured food, holiday treats and refreshments, Santa, music, face painting, and bounce houses, creating a full seasonal experience for families. “The children loved the event and the variety of options they could choose from.”

Stokes said the team also wanted parents to feel included and appreciated. Families received additional gifts on behalf of First Lady Tara Allen and DSU Athletics, which provided athletics merchandise. “As an executive board, we purchased a 150 dollar grocery card for the parents to show our appreciation for coming out and bringing their kids to the event,” she said.

University leaders publicly celebrated the Student Government Association for reflecting one of DSU’s mantras, Enter to learn; go forth to serve, noting that the students’ efforts reached families across the county.

Stokes reflected on the event with gratitude. “I had such a great time being part of this, and it filled me with so much joy.”

The 7th Annual Holiday Toy Drive remains one of Student Government’s signature community service initiatives, demonstrating the impact DSU students continue to make throughout the area.
