Celebrate Constitution Day!
Why It All Matters …Especially Now
The first three words of our Constitution –– “We the People” –– affirm that the government of the United States exists to serve its citizens. For 238 years as the world’s largest living charter, the Constitution has endured because its framers wisely separated and balanced governmental powers to safeguard the interests of majority rule and minority rights, of liberty and equality, and of both federal and state governments. Through amendments and interpretation, it continues to meet the changing needs of a nation vastly different from the 18th-century world in which it was created.
Now, in times that scholars have described as a “constitutional stress test” (Harvard magazine), understanding what’s in our Constitution is more critical than ever to navigate current debates on executive power, voting rights, immigration, and the separation of powers.
To mark this day, we invite all students, faculty, staff and Dover AFB partners to a campus-wide Constitution Day observance on Wednesday, September 17.
