DSU holds successful Sizzling Summer Jazz Series at the Schwartz

Monday, July 14, 2025

The Delaware State University Summer Sizzling Jazz Series, presented in partnership with Epitome of Soul, wrapped its final performance to the resounding applause and a full house – complete with balcony overflow seating on the last night. Candace Culcleasure (r) also performed her jazz vocals with Tony Cimorosi and his trio during the July 12 concert.

The energy was electric, with audience members dancing in the aisles and on the floor as the band’s trumpeter moved joyfully throughout the auditorium, turning the entire venue into a living, breathing celebration of jazz.

The three-part series—featuring the Tony Cimorosi Trio on July 12, Fostina Dixon and Winds of Change on July 19, and Tony Cappella and What the Funk on August 3—not only brought world-class jazz to the stage but also brought the community together in celebration of culture, music, and collaboration.

Dr. Nancy Wellington Bookhart led the series on behalf of DSU, with curation by Synita Butler-Hatcher of Epitome of Soul. The remaining team included Claudette Bradley (DSU), Darius Godwin (DSU), and community volunteer Doris Wellington. Their combined vision and thoughtful planning ensured a rich experience that resonated deeply with audiences of all ages.

Each evening concluded with a vibrant reception, generously sponsored by Grey Fox Grille, where attendees mingled, reflected, and connected. The atmosphere was further elevated by the immersive sound design provided by Deneisha of Sagacity Sound, whose expertise ensured each performance was not only heard but deeply felt.

The Summer Sizzling Jazz Series served as a shining example of DSU’s ongoing commitment to the arts and its ability to bring the wider community together through excellence in programming and partnership.
