Eugene Diggs named new director of bands at DSU

Wednesday, June 11, 2025

A new music chapter will be launched in the fall of 2025 with the arrival of Eugene Diggs as the new DSU Director of Bands.

Mr. Diggs, who calls Washington, D.C. the home city of his youth, began his journey as a music educator in Charlotte, N.C. where he established the only middle school marching band in the district. He then went on to become the Director of Bands at Hopewell High School in Hunterville, N.C., expanding the program from 16 students to 140.

He returned to his Morgan State University alma mater in 2021 where he served as the Assistant Director of Bands for two years. Mr. Diggs then in 2023 became the Director of Bands at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, where he tripled the size of the band program during his two-year stint.

He holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Gardner-Webb University and is currently pursuing a doctorate in music education at Boston University. His research focuses on the differences between music education programs at historically Black colleges and universities and predominantly white institutions.

Now at Delaware State University, Mr. Diggs is committed to growing the band program through high musical standards, discipline and a deep respect for the university community. He aims to elevate The Approaching Storm to national prominence, ensuring every student understands their role as an essential part of the university’s legacy.
