Certified Financial Planning Board validates new COB major

Tuesday, February 21, 2023

A relatively new undergraduate major under the College of Business has recently earned additional validation from the Certified Financial Planning (CFP) Board of Standards.

CFP Board of Standards has registered the COB’s Financial Planning and Wealth Management Bachelor of Science Degree Program among its list of schools that offer the requisite curriculum that will enable its students to take the CFP Certification Exam.

The College of Business launched the Financial Planning and Wealth Management BS Program in the fall of 2022. Prior to that, it was only a minor course of study under the COB’s Department of Accounting, Economics and Finance.

The new undergraduate major is designed for students with aspirations to help others find financial success through financial solutions, tools and strategies.

Remarkably, while the new major is only a little more than one semester old, it has propelled Delaware State University ranked as #9 in the Top 10 schools for financial planning curriculum, according to WealthManagement.com.

The establishment of the Financial Planning and Wealth Management major at Delaware State University comes at a time when the COVID pandemic years have seen a widening of the wealth gap between whites and minorities.

“The graduates of this new Financial Planning and Wealth Management program will be instrumental in helping people of color understand how to build wealth,” said Dr. Nandita Das, Professor of Finance and Director of the Financial Planning Program in the College of Business. “Our graduates will become part of an industry that has been consistently ranked as one of the 10 best career choices, with employment opportunities on track to expand rapidly.”
