Students’ community service sweet potatoes giveaway

Sunday, April 10, 2022

A host of University students volunteered some community service hours by participating in a sweet potatoes giveaway event to appreciative community members.Del State student load up a community member vehicle with sweet potatoes.

About 190 students gathered in Parking Lot 16 in back of the Bank of America Building with 20,000 pounds of North Carolina Sweet Potatoes and gave out bags of the orange vegetable to motorist who took advantage of the give-away on Sunday afternoon.

“Our students need community service hours for scholarships, their athletic commitments, and future co-curricular activities,” said University Chaplain Pam Adams, who oversaw the April 10 event. “The purpose of today’s event was to continue to instill into our students the importance of servant leadership.”

Because the give-away did not deplete the entire 20,000 pounds, there are plenty of free sweet potatoes that faculty and staff can get during a second give-away event that will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday, April 11 at Parking Lot 16.
