Student Leadership Conference

Delaware State University Division of Student Affairs is hosting its inaugural Student Leadership Conference on February 2, 2019, in the MLK Student Center on the main campus of DSU. The conference theme, Are You Ready to Take the Challenge? is a call to action and should be seen as an opportunity to gain greater insight into the steps needed to be an ideal leader. Students will be reminded that leadership is more than a title and position, it is the discipline, commitment, and self-accountability put towards what is best for the organization you represent. Students will be provided with strategies and tools to use in current and future leadership positions on campus as well as in their future career endeavors.

Call for Programs

Delaware State University Division of Student Affairs is hosting a Student Leadership Conference in the MLK Student Center on DSU’s Main Campus in Dover, Delaware. The conference planning committee currently invites interested presenters to submit proposals for conference sessions for the conference on February 2nd, 2019. The 1st Annual Student Leadership Conference will provide student attendees with strategies and tools to use in their future leadership positions on campus as well as in their future career endeavors. Proposals are due by Friday, December 21st, 2018.

The conference theme, Are You Ready to Take the Challenge? can be seen as a call to action for all student leaders on campus. It is a reminder that leadership is more than a title and position, it is the discipline, commitment, and self-accountability put towards what is best for the organization you represent. Interested presenters should submit proposals to lead sessions on the following designated topics:

  • How to Manage People
    Managing people is always the most difficult and frustrating part of any leadership role – being a leader of your peers can make it even more challenging. This session will teach you skills necessary to balance being a friend, while also being a respected leader who can get the work done that is necessary to an organization’s success. 
  • Mission Driven Organizations
    What is the reason behind what you do as an organization? Are you staying true to what your organization states it believes in? Would those who created your organization be proud of your actions today? This session will allow you to review your programs and activities and ensure that they are in support of your organization’s mission statement. 
  • Collaboration vs. Co-Sponsorship
    Are you really collaborating with others or just putting your name on the flyer? This session will compare and contrast collaboration vs co-sponsorship and provide you with critical tips for creating true collaborations that maximize your resources.
  • Money Management
    In the current economic status across the country, being fiscally responsible is critical to the success of any organization. This session will teach you skills to better manage your organization’s funds as well as outlining opportunities to locate additional funding sources. 
  • Accountability
    Being accountable for one’s actions is critical for any successful leader or organization. This session will review the importance of individual accountability as well as that of the entire organization. 
  • Public Speaking
    Do you enjoy public speaking? How well do you speak in front of a group? Can you convey the message you intended to deliver? Join this session to learn tips on effective communication and public speaking so that you can enhance your leadership skills. 
  • What Does Leadership Look Like?
    Being a leader is much more than just a title and the perks that comes with that title. Come lean what is means to walk, talk, and act like a leader – from professional dress to all of the expected responsibilities that come with leadership positions on campus.
  • Creating Effective Programs
    What does it take to create a successful program? This session will review all aspects of event planning- from program title and content to operational planning and evaluation. You will leave this session with a roadmap to creating organized and effective programs that will have a much higher rate of success. 
  • Career Planning
    What are you doing to prepare yourself for your future career? Are you utilizing all of the resources that are available to you? Come join this session to get the tips and information that will keep you on target to get the career of your dreams. 
  • Time Management
    Are you effectively utilizing your time each day? Do you take on too much? Research shows that college students have some of the busiest schedules out of anyone at any age and taking on a leadership role can make your schedule even more packed. Come to this session to learn tips that will enhance your time management skills and allow you to be more successful in all areas of life.
