DSU student Tori McLeary earns American Legion Spirit of Service Award

Tuesday, May 12, 2026

A Delaware State University junior and active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force received the American Legion Spirit of Service Award, recognizing her dedication to service in her community.

The award recognizes enlisted service members who go above and beyond their military duties through volunteer work. For Tori McLeary, that recognition reflects more than 400 hours of service dedicated to helping others.

While maintaining the demands of military service and pursuing her degree in accounting at Delaware State University, McLeary has consistently made time to give back. Her volunteer efforts span a range of community needs, with a significant portion of her time dedicated to supporting fellow service members.

More than 250 of her volunteer hours were spent at the Airman’s Attic, where she assisted Airmen in accessing essential items. She has also volunteered at animal shelters, food banks, and community events, stepping in wherever help was needed and making a steady impact through consistent service.

“I am always looking for places where I can be helpful and get involved,” McLeary said.

Balancing her responsibilities in the U.S. Air Force with the expectations of a full academic schedule has required discipline and focus, skills she credits in part to her experience as a DSU student.

“Attending DSU as a member of the military has helped me develop discipline and time management skills,” McLeary said. “Studying remotely demands self-discipline and motivation, qualities that I can apply to my work in the U.S. Air Force and other aspects of my life. It keeps me focused and resilient despite being busy with multiple responsibilities.”

Her coursework has also shaped how she approaches her work, reinforcing attention to detail and personal accountability.

“My accounting classes have changed the way I think and made me pay much closer attention to detail,” McLeary said. “Above all, studying online has taught me responsibility and independence.”

Among the many volunteer experiences, one moment continues to stand out.

“The most memorable experience was helping someone at the Airman’s Attic who really needed basic items,” McLeary said. “Seeing his reaction made me realize that even a small gesture can have a big impact.”

Receiving the award has affirmed the value of her efforts across every part of her life.

“Receiving this award is extremely important to me, as it shows that all my efforts, whether in the military, college, or volunteer service, were worth it,” McLeary said. “It motivates me to keep moving forward and continue finding ways to make a difference.”
