Delaware State University is celebrating one of its own after PhD student Onyekachi Williams was honored with the 2025 Impact Award by the Spur Impact Association. The award was presented during the SpurSummit and Fourth Annual Leadership Dinner on August 5 in Wilmington.

Williams, who is pursuing his doctorate in applied mathematics under the guidance of Drs. Yuriy Markushin and Gulnihal Ozbay, was recognized for his leadership and dedication to service. As founding president of the DSU Campus Lions Club, he created community-focused programs that serve local residents while preparing students to grow as leaders. He continues that work by mentoring students across campus, guiding them as they build confidence and strengthen their skills.

“This recognition reflects the values of service and leadership that DSU instills in its students,” Williams said. “Our work with the Lions Club was about giving back to the community and building the next generation of leaders. I am honored that these efforts have been recognized.”

The Spur Impact Award highlights individuals who make a measurable difference in their communities and serve as role models for others. SpurSummit, which took place before the award dinner, is regarded as one of the country’s premier leadership gatherings. The summit brought together hundreds of professionals for keynote speakers, workshops, and networking opportunities designed to inspire growth, innovation, and community impact.

The event was supported by sponsors including Epic Marketing Consultants, Barclays, Capital One, Discover, King Creative, JPMorgan Chase, M&T Bank, ChristianaCare, Goldey-Beacom College, and WSFS Bank.

Williams said the honor motivates him to keep pushing forward in both his academic journey and his service work.

“Being recognized with this award means a lot, but it also reminds me that there is still so much more to do,” he said. “I want to continue using my education in applied mathematics and my role as a mentor to create opportunities that uplift others.”

He added that his training with Cooperative Extension has strengthened his ability to connect with younger students. “I am grateful for the outreach education I receive from Dr. Gulnihal Ozbay, which helps me support youth as they build their skills in science and math.”
