Rev. Dr. Shirlyn H. Brown Endowed Scholarship Fund
Celebrating a life of service
Reverend Doctor Brown’s Family thanks you for joining them in celebrating her life and helping them honor her memory with this scholarship fund.
Dr. Brown came to Del State in 1999 as the Director of Student Activities, a position she served in until late 2002. During those years, she also served as adjunct instructor in the English and literature areas, and she continued to serve as an adjunct from that period until the fall semester of 2020.
She was also one of the principal theatre directors at Del State over the last 10 years, challenging the University’s student thespians with productions such as For Colored Girls , The Wiz, The Bluest Eye, A Street Car Named Desire, and many others. Dr. Brown most recently was collaborating with Dr. David Tolley and working with students on a musical production of the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet. Despite being weakened by her illness, Dr. Brown continued to visit DSU and meet with her student thespians about the costume needs for the play. Dr. Brown was also very dedicated to the Methodist Student Organization on campus, serving as advisor at Del State. She continued to meet with this faith group virtually throughout her illness.
At the time over her passing, Dr. Brown was the Pastor of Ezion-Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Wilmington, where she was actively serving until medical issues intervened. Over the years, she served as the pastor of a number of churches as well as the Director of Connectional Ministries and as the Superintendent of the Eastern District.
We have founded this Endowed Scholarship Fund as a way to honor her legacy and continue her mission of service. In line with her passions, this scholarship will help students in financial need to attain an undergraduate degree here at DSU, with special consideration given to members of the Methodist Students Association. We thank you for your generosity in contributing to this fund.
