First and Second Year Programs

First and Second Year Programs includes the University Seminar course, Sophomore Year Experience Program, and Student Success Programming. Both programs will provide students with workshops, programs, and events that will help them establish a connection with Delaware State University. First and Second Year Programs strive to assist first-year students with navigating their transition into college and helping sophomores with improving their academic and leadership skills.

First Year Experience (FYE) Program

The First Year Experience (FYE) Program at Delaware State University consists of the University Seminar course, First-Year Forums, and Student Success Workshops. The FYE Program is designed to assist new students with gaining the skills and knowledge needed to graduate college.

Sophomore Year Experience Program

The mission of the Sophomore Year Experience Program is to help second-year students persist and graduate by providing programs, workshops, and events that will cultivate a sense of belonging and improve leadership and academic skills.

The Hornet Highway program is designed to help second-year students with developing scholastic and professional development skills needed to succeed in and outside of the classroom.

The Hornet Highway Program has two options for students called lanes. The Hornet Scholar Lane consists of workshops and programs targeted toward increasing their academic performance. The Iconic Hornet Lane consists of workshops and programs focused on preparing students interested in leadership roles on and off campus.

University Seminar & First Year Forums

University Seminar
University Seminar is a one-credit General Education course that helps students transition into college and succeed at Delaware State University (DSU). The course content will focus on DSU’s traditions and processes, student success strategies, campus resources, and college navigation. The course will inform students about college expectations and institutional procedures such as registration, financial aid, and academic advising.

First-Year Forum
The First-Year Forum aims to introduce students to campus resources, academic expectations, and Delaware State University’s history. First-Year Forum is a weekly virtual event designed to gather, engage, and inform all University Seminar students. Students must attend to hear from guest speakers, including participation in DSU’s Convocation and Founders Day. First-Year Forum is a vital part of the University Seminar grade.

Student Success Workshops

Student Success Workshops are designed to enlighten and empower students to thrive in college. The workshops will cover academics, professionalism, diversity and inclusion, civic engagement, and health and wellness.
