Jumpstart Program

What is the Jumpstart Program?

Jumpstart is an academic and leadership development program for first time, first-year students.  Jumpstart students will have the opportunity to acclimate to campus, develop leadership skills and earn up to 9 credits before their first semester of college begins. Students with a cumulative high school GPA of 2.7 or better combined with an SAT score of 800 are invited to participate.  The Summer Bridge program runs from June 25, 2018 to July 20, 2018.

The Summer Bridge program requires students to complete all three courses below. Students will not be allowed to take an amended or abbreviated schedule. For example, if you wanted to take a class in place of or in addition to what is listed below it will be denied. Introduction to Algebra or College Algebra
(Math class is determined by ALEKS placement score)


American History to 1865 3

Students will receive their math course after they have taken the ALEKS placement exam. Students must complete the ALEKS at desu.edu/aleks-math-placement  by 11:59pm on June 3, 2018. Your math class is based on the highest ALEKS score received on or before June 3, 2018.

Less than 30 No course equivalent
  • You cannot register for any math course
  • To place in a math course, you must review the content in the Prep and Learning module
  • Then retake the placement test to earn a score of 30 or higher
30-44 MTSC 075:  Introduction to Algebra
  • Credits earned from this course do not count toward graduation
  • This is a pre-college level course.  It provides students with a solid foundation in algebra and problem-solving skills needed to move comfortably and confidently into a college-level course.
45-59 MTSC 121:  College Algebra

Summer Bridge 2018 COST

The Summer Bridge Program total cost is $3,400.00 and includes the New Student Orientation fee, Housing Deposit, summer classes, summer housing, meals, activities, staffing, and books. Financial Aid may cover the majority of the Summer Bridge Program cost. However, the $200 New Student Orientation Fee and the $200 Housing Deposit are NOT covered by Financial Aid and must be paid in full before you are allowed to participate.
