Ethical Challenges in Scientific Research - February 11, 2008
Presented by Dr. John F. Ahearne, Executive Director Emeritus of the Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Society, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Delaware Biotechnology Institute The Ethics Resource Site was established at Delaware State University as an intrinsic part of the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) (with a 50% match from the state of Delaware), this program is designed to improve the scientific research infrastructure throughout the state of Delaware. Administered by the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, the program is a partnership of the following institutions of higher learning: the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Wesley College, and Delaware Technical and Community College. Each of these institutions has its own unique, but complementary, project that, when taken in conjunction, advance the goals of interdisciplinary scientific research in the area of “complex environmental systems and ecosystem health.”

At Delaware State University, the interdisciplinary research focus is on scientific issues of concern in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in Delaware and the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. A major long-term goal of the project at Delaware State University is to establish a “Center for Integrated Ecosystem Studies.” An integral part of this project is an ethics and public policy component.

The Ethics Resource Site was established at Delaware State University as a repository of expertise in both normative ethical theory and applied ethics, in areas that include (but are not limited to):

  • bioethics (i.e., ethical issues that arise in the biological sciences as well as those that arise in the field of health care),
  • business ethics,
  • environmental ethics, and
  • ethics in technology.

A main purpose of The Ethics Resource Site is to serve the citizens of the state of Delaware in, at least, two ways:

  • first, to raise awareness concerning ethical issues with which people are confronted in their daily lives (both public and private), and
  • second, to address the needs of a variety of groups of people with respect to the clarification of ethical concepts and the understanding of ethical issues, both of which are relevant to such groups of people (e.g., people who share the same occupational, social, or ethnic concerns).

Lectures, Forums, and Panel Discussions

In an effort to raise the awareness of members of the community-at-large regarding social issues that impact our daily lives as well as to promote an understanding of the ethical concerns and a clarification of the ethical concepts that are inherent in such issues, lectures, forums, and panel discussions are sponsored by The Ethics Resource Site.

Seminars for DSU Faculty, Researchers, and Students

In addition to serving the community-at-large, another purpose of the Site is to offer seminars and courses (on ethical issues that are relevant to researchers in the natural sciences) for faculty, post-doctoral research fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students, who are engaged in research activities that are related to the EPSCoR project.

Professional Ethics Consulting Service

For employees of business enterprises, employees of governmental agencies, members of professional associations, and members of other similar organizations, The Ethics Resource Site sponsors the following:

  • Ethics Conferences: which can carry continuing education credit for members of professional associations
  • Ethics Courses: which offer a more extensive learning experience on professional ethics issues
  • Ethics Seminars: which focus on specific ethical issues or topics that normally would be designed for specific groups.
