NURSING MAJOR: Because of the nature of the nursing program, sequential selection of courses is important. Successful completion of all courses listed in the first four semesters of the Nursing Program of Study is required for admission to the first nursing courses and related laboratory study.  Students must follow the prescribed sequence to avoid delay in progressing through the program. All parts of nursing courses with theory, laboratory and clinical components must be passed in order to pass the course. If either portion is failed, the entire course must be repeated.

To receive a BS degree in Nursing, each student is required to complete 122 credit hours of coursework distributed as follows:  65 credit hours of Nursing Courses, and 58 credit hours of General Education Requirements and Support Courses.

Progression Requirements:

Online Clinical Progression Applications are only accepted between November 15 and February 25. If you are a transfer student or a new freshman, you may still be admitted to the University as a pre-nursing student. Please visit the DSU Admissions homepage at www.desu.edu/admissions for more information about the undergraduate application procedure.

Upon successful completion of the first four semesters of study with a grade of C or better, achievement of a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or greater, and passing scores on the Nursing Admission Exam (minimum scores designated by the Dept. of Nursing), a student may be admitted to the Clinical Nursing Level of the program.

The Clinical Nursing Level begins in the junior year. However, if any of the above requirements are not fulfilled, students will not be granted admission to the Clinical Nursing level. Due to the demanding nature of the curriculum and the nursing profession, it is advised that each student take advantage of all campus resources to diligently excel in all pre-nursing and nursing level courses.

In preparation for clinical rotations, nursing level students will be required to have the following items completed:

  1. Valid healthcare provider CPR certification
  2. Child abuse and elder abuse background checks
  3. Fingerprints with Criminal background check in the state of Delaware
  4. Recent physical exam
  5. A 10 panel urine drug screening completed within 6 weeks prior to the beginning of the first clinical course
  6. Immunizations (MMR1 and 2, Td, Polio, Varicella or proof of disease, Hepatitis)
  7. A two-step PPD done within the last 3 months prior to start of clinical rotation
  8. Transportation to clinical sites is the responsibility of the student.
