"Improving mass spectrometry for accurate chemical measurements in physical, environmental and life sciences"

Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 11 a.m.

Luna I. Mishoe Science South 223

The 2013-2014 season of the College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology Dean's Distinguished Lecturer Series continues on Thursday, November 14th, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Luna I. Mishoe Science Center, Lecture Hall 223. Our featured guest speaker will be Dr. Sergio C. Nanita, analytical chemist and mass spectrometrist.

He earned a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras (UPR-RP) in 2001 and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Purdue University in 2005. Dr. Nanita joined DuPont in 2006, where he is currently a principal investigator. He is interested in developing novel, broadly-applicable mass spectrometry methods to solve complex problems in industry and society. His research has resulted in new high-throughput methods for pesticide residue analysis, which have proven useful to address challenges in agricultural chemistry, environmental sciences and food safety. He is also interested in applying analytical chemistry in collaborative/interdisciplinary research globally; he has led or participated in collaborations with >30 institutions around the world. He has authored >20 peer-reviewed publications. He is interested in increasing student awareness on professional career options in science, and in 2010 organized a career seminar series as part of the Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS). He contributed as a science writer for the American Chemical Society, Puerto Rico Local Section, and El Nuevo Día Newspaper as part of the International Year of Chemistry (2011). Dr. Nanita has been an active volunteer at the Delaware Valley Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group (a forum of the American Chemical Society, Philadelphia local section), serving as secretary of the group in 2011-2012, chair-elect in 2012-2013, and chair in 2013-2014. Dr. Nanita is currently serving a two-year appointment at the DuPont Fellows Forum as an associate (2012-2014). He was also appointment to serve on the Ethics Committee of the American Chemical Society as an Associate in 2012-2013 and a member in 2013-2015.

Refreshments will be served.
