DSU 117th Commencement Could Be Another Record Setting Year!
New school records could be set in the total number of graduates and doctoral candidates when Delaware State University holds its 117th Commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 17 at Alumni Stadium on campus.
The University won’t know the final graduation numbers until spring semester 2009 grades are tabulated into the graduation candidates’ records. However, the preliminary count indicates that the final count could shatter school records.
Byron Pitts (pictured above), an award-winning correspondent for CBS, will be the Commencement keynote speaker. Mr. Pitts is the chief national correspondent for The CBS News Evening News with Katie Couric and a contributing correspondent on 60 Minutes, the renowned CBS News magazine program.
DSU will hold its annual Honors Convocation at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 16 in the Education and Humanities Building. The Honors Convocation – which recognizes all the 2009 graduates who qualify for the academic excellence distinctions of Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude – will feature Dr. Lillian Lowery, Delaware Secretary of Education and DSU Board of Trustees member, as its featured speaker.
During the DSU Commencement weekend, the University will celebrate and honor the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1959 during a 5:30 p.m. reception on Saturday, May 16 at the historic Loockerman Hall on campus. The Class of 1959 is Golden!
Members of the class of 1959 will gather on Commencement Weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Among them will be a former long-time employee, Mrs. Minnie Hill, who retired with nearly 40 years in the Office of Student Accounts. Mrs. Hill, along with nine of her classmates will be honored at a reception in Loockerman Hall on May 16, beginning at 5:30 pm.
