Hornets to play in ‘game of a lifetime’ in September

The DSU Hornets will meet the Southern University Jaguars in ESPN Regional TV’s MEAC/SWAC Challenge at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL, on September 5th.

The MEAC/SWAC Challenge is an annual HBCU football game that showcases a team from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Southwestern Athletic Conference. This year’s game between DSU and SU will begin at noon and will be broadcast live on ESPN.

Melikechi named dean of college

Dr. Noureddine Melikechi, a 15-year faculty member at DSU, has been named as the dean of the institution’s College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology. He has served as the interim dean of that college since October 2008. Melikechi has been instrumental in the University’s development of optics curriculum and research.

Chase ’72 succeeds Ottley as DSUAA president

On May 22, the DSU Alumni Association elected a new roster of officers to serve a 2010–2012 term. Newly elected DSUAA president Dr. K. Bernard Chase ’72 succeeds Deidre Y. Ottley, who completed her 2008–2010 term.

Hornets announce 2010 soccer newcomers

Delaware State University Head Women's Soccer Coach Nitan Soni has announced that seven high school seniors have signed to attend the university and compete for the Hornets beginning with the upcoming season.

DSU gets $2.5M grant for MARC program

Efforts to produce high-quality student research received a great shot in the arm recently as the National Institute of Health and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded DSU a five-year, $2.5 million grant to support its Minority Access to Research Careers program. The MARC program guides traditionally underrepresented groups into STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers and into graduate training at the PhD level.

Look for an article in the upcoming summer issue of The Echo that revisits 1968 demonstrations at Delaware State College, as told by former SGA President Leroy Tate and others.


Record 98 student athletes make All-Academic list

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has named 98 DSU student athletes to its All-Academic Team for their work in the classroom. The number of student athletes recognized by the MEAC this year is a school record for DSU. In all, 613 student athletes from the league’s 12 schools met the criteria during the 2009–10 academic year. Howard University just topped DSU with 100 of its students making All-Academic selection.
