Aviation Student Marc Anderson Soars in Flight Competition

DSU aviation students showed off their aircraft command and took home several top prizes during the Oct. 23–27 National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s Region VII SAFECON flight competition.

Competitor Marc Anderson of Felton, DE, ranked No. 1 for Top Scoring Male Pilot, Power Off Landing, and Short Field Approach and Landing, and he ranked No. 2 for Top Pilot. The team of Anderson, as drop master, and Kenneth Ritchie of Ft. Washington, MD, as pilot, ranked No. 2 for Message Drop.

Anderson, Ritchie and fellow competitor Vincent Russ of Willingboro, NJ, are coached by flight instructor Courtney Walters, an alumnus of the DSU aviation program. They won the team award for safety, of which Capt. Stephen R. Speed, director of the DSU aviation program, said he was particularly proud.

"The other teams emulated many of the precautions that the DSU team put in place in preparation for the competition once they observed how our team approached safety," said Speed.

NIFA uses collegiate aviation competition to promote aviation education and safety. The top-ranked schools in each region go on to compete in the national SAFECON competition.
