Department of Physics and Pre-Engineering
Overview
The mission of the Department of Physics and Pre-Engineering is to provide a quality higher education in physics and physics with emphasis in selected engineering disciplines that prepares students to achieve professional success and leadership status in their communities.
The Department of Physics and Pre-Engineering is also home to two (2) major research centers, specializing in lasers and optics: the Center for Research and Education in the Optical Sciences and Applications, also known as CREOSA, and the Center for Applied Optics for Space Sciences, CAOSS. These centers are part of a small, elite group funded by the National Science Foundation's CREST (Centers for Research Excellence in Science and Technology) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's URC 5 initiatives. Undergraduate and graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) students with a keen interest in areas of inquiry including lasers, optics, biomedical imaging, biophotonics, and the space sciences are afforded opportunities to receive generous stipends and one-on-one faculty mentoring, working alongside accomplished researchers with state-of-the-art equipment; presenting papers and research at national and international conferences; and participating in seminars and other opportunities for professional development. (For more information about these programs, click here.)

In addition, students who plan to teach on the secondary level must take Physics 191, 192, 201-202, 261, 305, 316, 361, 418. Every physics teaching major must take Astronomy 101; Biology 100, 205; Chemistry 101-102; Mathematics 251, 252, 253, 351; Education 204, 207, 210, 313, 318, 322, 344, 357, 400, 416; Psychology 201; Physical Geology 101.
ENGINEERING PHYSICS MINOR: A student who desires a minor in Engineering physics must complete Physics 201 and 202, and twelve (12) additional hours of physics with the approval of the department.
The Pre-Engineering Program at Delaware State University offers students the opportunity to complete the first two (2) years of an engineering curriculum and then transfer to other institutions to complete an engineering degree.
The Pre-Engineering Program offers three (3) tracks:
