NURSING
MAJOR: Because of the nature of the
nursing program sequential selection
of courses is important. Successful
completion of specified courses in
the natural and social sciences and
nursing is required for admission to
the first nursing course with related
laboratory study. Students must follow
the prescribed sequence to avoid delay
in progressing through the program.
All parts of nursing courses with theory,
laboratory and clinical components
must be passed in order to pass the
course. If either portion is failed,
the entire course must be repeated.
To receive a BSN degree in Nursing, each student is required to complete 139 credit hours of coursework distributed as follows: 76 credits of Nursing Courses, and 62 credit hours of General Education Requirements and Support Courses.
Progression Requirements:
Online Clinical Progression Applications will no longer be accepted for Fall 2009 Clinical Admission. The application deadline was February 25, 2009. Please check back on this website for the Fall 2010 Clinical Progression Application. If you are a transfer student or a new freshman, you may still be admitted to the University as a pre-nursing student in Fall 2009. Please visit the DSU Admissions homepage at http://www.desu.edu/admission for more information about the undergraduate application procedure. |
Upon successful completion of all year one pre-nursing courses with a grade of C or better, achievement of a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or greater, and passing scores on the NET (minimum scores designated by the Dept. of Nursing), a student is admitted to the Clinical Nursing Level of the program.
The Clinical Nursing Level begins in the sophomore year for most students. However, if any of the above requirements are not fulfilled, students will not be granted admission to the Clinical Nursing level. Due to the demanding nature of the curriculum and the nursing profession, it is advised that each student take advantage of all campus resources to diligently excel in all pre-nursing and nursing level courses.
In preparation for clinical rotations, nursing level students will be required to have the following items completed:
- Valid healthcare provider CPR certification
- Child abuse and elder abuse background checks
- Fingerprints with Criminal background check in the state of Delaware
- Recent physical exam
- Urine drug screening completed within 6 weeks prior to the beginning of clinical course
- Immunizations (MMR1 and 2, Td, Polio, Varicella or proof of disease, Hepatitis)
- Two PPD done within the last 3 months prior to start of clinical rotation
- Transportation to clinical sites
