Delaware State University offers summer camps for youth in sports, business, aviation, robotics and more! 

Summer 2016 Aviation | Business and Finance | Science | Sports | Youth Enrichment Aviation Camps The Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy | Grades 9-12 | June 19-24 | 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The ACE Academy at Delaware State University is a program designed to offer an introduction to the aviation industry and aviation careers to middle and high school students. The goal is to provide an opportunity that will provide insight and hands-on experience for students to learn the history of aviation, fundamentals of aerodynamics, the role of government in aviation, pioneers in aviation, and the many careers available in the aviation industry. Students will participate in many engaging activities: model aircraft building; introductory orientation flights; visits to aviation museums; FAA and air traffic control facilities; air shows (if available); aviation speaker forums; and field trips to military and commercial facilities. Contact: John Sherman | 302.730.5075​ | Cost $20   OBAP/DSU Solo Flight Academy | Grades 10-12 | July 10-24 | 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The goal of the OBAP/DSU Solo Flight Academy is to excite young people about flying and their potential in the aviation field. We bring this excitement to life though academics and actual aircraft flying culminated by an aircraft solo flight. The academy activities form the foundation of a productive career in aviation or other professional fields. Your son or daughter will receive approximately 10 hours of flight time and 30 hours of ground school. The program fee includes room and board, approximately 10 hours of flight time; flight computer, logbook and plotter; ground school textbooks and supplies; planned tours (weather permitting); and one year OBAP student membership. Contact: John Sherman | 302.730.5075 | Cost $600 Business and Finance Camps Camp Wall Street 101 | Grades 9-12 | August 1-5  | 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Camp Wall Street 101 at Delaware State University is a day camp for students entering grades 9-12 with an interest in finance and the stock market. The camp will be held primarily in the state-of-the-art Financial Network Trading Room, which replicates a real-world trading experience and functions as a laboratory and classroom. Students will learn the basics about financial management from financial professionals. Participants will compete for prizes and awards. The camp includes a field trip to enhance their experience. Does he or she want to know what it takes to operate a business? The JET Program at Delaware State University teaches entrepreneurship to youth in a fun and exciting summer camp. Students in the JET Program will participate in exercises to spark their creativity; participate in hands-on activities; act upon a dream and be their own boss; learn how to think like an entrepreneur; and create a business plan all while making new friends and having fun!  Students will participate in Market Day and take part ina business plan competition with the chance to win prizes and awards.  Some transportation may be provided. The program was developed to address future transportation workforce needs by ensuring that the industry has a well-trained, qualified and diverse workforce well into the 21st century. Contact: Martin Nunlee | 302.857.6931   Science Camps (STARS) Science and Technology Academy for Residence Scholars | Grades 10-12 | July 10 - July 23 The Science and Technology Academy for Residence Scholars is a two week residential enrichment program on the campus of Delaware State University for rising 10th-12th grade high school students. The STARS program is designed to stimulate and extend the interest of high school students with a GPA average of B or above in the fields of mathematics, science and information technology. The science labs, computer labs and classrooms at DSU will be the setting for small group, hands-on activities in Mathematics, Science, Information Technology, English and SAT preparation. During the 8-week program, students will conduct research in various OSCAR laboratories and at the end of the program they will present their research at the Annual Delaware State University Summer Research Symposium. Participants in our summer program will receive a stipend of $1,500 for working 35 hours per week for the 8-week duration of the program. Criteria for participating in our program: An interest in Physics, Pre-Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or Chemistry; rising junior or senior, 3.0 GPA or higher, U.S. citizen or permanent resident. This summer camp will be beneficial to students, who would not only learn bio techniques through hands on experience but would also learn about the food science major; Students will have a fun time for 2 weeks: 1) Making fermented foods; 2) Extract DNA & Protein from foods and bacteria; 3)  And more exciting activities. Students who have participated in the prior Mindstorm camps will build the FIRST LEGO League field missions for the upcoming competition season. They will try to predict the placement of the field’s components, how they function and the possible names of the different missions. Students will also learn about the FIRST LEGO League competition and the FLL Core Values.  Finally, the students will build and program robots that will attempt perform the various tasks on the field like at an actual robotics competition. DSU @ Georgetown   Connected Degree Programs Delaware State University, in collaboration with Delaware Technical & Community College, offers DTCC students who have earned an Associate Degree, the opportunity to complete a Bachelors Degree in a convenient accelerated format.  Connected degrees that can be completed on the Georgetown campus include: Social Work (BSW) Note: Additional courses may be needed to complete the accelerated degree if transferring  credits from an institution other than DTCC. Convenient Location For students from Salisbury to Milford, and Laurel to Rehoboth, the DSU location in Sussex County is conveniently located on the Delaware Technical & Community College campus in Georgetown, at the intersection of Routes 113 and 404. DSU offices are located in Room 512 of the Carter Partnership Center. Directions Affordability Students who transfer into connected degree programs receive $1000 per year in scholarship monies and may be eligible for many other scholarships, Pell grants, and student loans. With two years of transfer credit from the community college, and an accelerated course sequence, students can complete their Bachelor’s degree affordably. OUPV CAPTAIN'S COURSE: The course consists of 56 hours of classroom instruction. The instruction covers navigation rules, nautical charts and publications, tides and current, weather, safety, marine firefighting, marlinspike and piloting (plotting) on nautical charts. The tests measure basic skills and are broken into three separate exams: Praxis I Reading Test: Measures a candidate’s ability to analyze and comprehend texts. Praxis I Mathematical Test: Measures a candidate’s basic skills in math. Praxis I Writing Test : Measures a candidate’s ability to articulate thoughts and communicate effectively through writing. This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes among other things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. The course places much emphasis on ensuring that facilitators of learning gain grounded understanding as to what is required when teaching towards achieving learning outcomes that are developmental and measurable. Another essential feature of the course is helping participants to determine and apply the best practice instructional and assessment of strategies for the CBET context. The course will also cover the basic concepts and practical methods attending to competency-based learning in each learning domain. Award:  Upon fulfilling all the core course requirements, an individual is awarded the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Competency-based Lesson Planning. Registration Fee:  The cost for registration is $450, which includes course materials.   Advanced Certificate of Competency in Workforce Training and Development: This course prepares individuals to become competent and effective at carrying out the many and varied tasks associated with the design and delivery of training interventions. Individuals who have responsibility for coordinating and/or supervising/managing training activities in any organization will also benefit meaningfully from the course. The course invites participation from individuals who have been previously exposed to the foundations of training session planning and delivery. Throughout this advanced course, participants will explore and gain deeper understanding of the research informed perspectives and best-practices that should be employed when attending to the different aspects of training planning and delivery. Each of the six course modules requires participants to thoughtfully and critically examine an area that is essential to the overall training planning and delivery process. In addition to addressing the steps in the training planning and delivery process, significant attention will be placed on helping participants to understand  the HOW and WHY of applying critical thinking skills and transformational learning strategies when facilitating training interventions.
